This scholarship fund was established in 2018 by the Hennebery Family to recognize the role their parents, Mary and Reg Hennebery, played in establishing and supporting the Montague – Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games. Mary and her brother, Ernie McKenna, co-founded the Goodwill Games in 1969.

The Montague – Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games Scholarship will be awarded to a post-secondary student who played in the Goodwill Games as a member of the Montague Minor Hockey Association team. Applications for this scholarship are available for submission in the spring intake of applications through the Community Foundation of PEI Application Portal.

The first Goodwill Games were played in 1969 in Montague. It takes place each year during the visiting team’s March break. It all started when Ernie McKenna, a transplant from PEI who was coaching a Mount Hamilton Pee Wee hockey team, talked to his sister, Mary Henneberry, in Montague, and arranged an exhibition in the small island town.

Since that time – the two associations have alternated visits for a week of fun – with the hockey becoming secondary to the experience of the games itself. Players billet with host families, and experience what the host communities have to offer.
