Oscar Waugh Friends Foundation Fund
The Oscar Waugh Friends Foundation Fund has been established at the Community Foundation of PEI to honour the life of Oscar Waugh who passed away on July 29, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer.
The Fund itself was established as a Legacy for Oscar and to support causes that were important to him, all relating to childhood cancer, specifically to those children diagnosed on PEI. He wished to donate a “buzzy bee” to every child with cancer who needed to be given medications at home to help deal with the sting of those needles and medications. He wished to support Make a Wish PEI, and he wanted to support families directly to help financially with trips to the IWK and other expenses. He also wanted to support the yearly Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer, and many other things. His focus was on other children, like himself, having to live with cancer.
Further details will be available in the very near future on the types of projects that will be supported.
Oscar’s journey with cancer began 18 months ago and ended peacefully at home. He was able to be in his own room and surrounded with love by his family. Through all the many scans, surgeries, biopsies, tests, needle pokes for bloodwork, IV chemotherapy, injections, PICC lines and butterflies, trips to Halifax for chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and literally thousands of pills, he never complained. Not once. His resilience, courage, optimism, grace, and determination were nothing short of remarkable. He was, just like his school basketball team, a Warrior.
This picture sums up all of those qualities. When this picture was taken, his hair was falling out (for the second time), and he was fully aware of his prognosis. Yet his smile shows inner happiness, quiet confidence, and strength. An inspiration to all who knew him, Oscar was an amazing, loving brother, a fierce friend, a joy of a son, and a kind-hearted, thoughtful, beautiful soul.
