The Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island

Annual Report - 2009

Presidents Message

In the recently published 2007 Canada Survey of Giving/Volunteering and Participating, it is reported that Prince Edward Island has an 89% donor rate which is the second highest in Canada. In addition, the average annual donation by an individual is $449. At the Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island we have experienced the generosity of Islanders first-hand through the establishment of over 50 endowment funds to support the needs of our community and serve the community in perpetuity. The 2009 Annual Report provides highlights of a successful year that was only made possible by our donors, Board of Directors, and many volunteers who gave their time and expertise to causes that matter. I encourage you to take some time to read about the many events, activities and work that has been done.

Though we have had success, we know that there continues to be needs and challenges for our Island communities that need to be addressed. Over the coming year, we will develop and implement strategies to be more accessible to individuals and organizations, promote the wide-range of services that we offer which makes giving easier, and to continue to facilitate discussions with community leaders to identify new directions to support philanthropic activities which invest in sustainable solutions.

The Board wishes to acknowledge the many contributions and dedication that our four retiring Board members, Heather MacDonald, Norman Carruthers, David Anderson and Lou Ann Thompson, have made to The Community Foundation and wish them a fond farewell and all the best in their future endeavors.

Also, we would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the contributions of our past Executive Director, Donald MacDonald who, after three years of dedicated service, left the Community Foundation in December 2009 to pursue a teaching career at Holland College. We are very pleased that Donnie has continued with the Foundation on a volunteer basis to share his financial expertise in the general operations and administrative functions.

The Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island.s mission is to improve the quality of life on PEI through the creation and building of endowment trust funds that will enhance life for all residents. Please contact us to discuss what services we can provide for you.

Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner & Silent Auction

The 2nd Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction was held at the Roma at Three Rivers Historic Site in Brudenell. For the second year, the event had a great response and was very successful with entertainment provided by The Queens County Fiddlers, and Chef Peter Dewar and staff prepared a wonderful traditional three course meal. The funds raised through this event, support the work of the Foundation and its projects, and allows the Foundation to grow within the community of PEI.

Thank you to those who helped out and volunteered at the event, those who attended the dinner, and the businesses and organizations who generously donated items for the Silent Auction

This year we will be returning to Roma at Three Rivers Historic Site in Brudenell on July 30th, 2010 and look forward to seeing you.

Summer Lecture Series

In 2009, the Summer Lecture Series found a new home at the recently renovated and historic Hampton United Church that is now home to Bites Café. This years Lecture Series showcased four different presenters which topics ranged from music to food.

Patrons were in for a treat when they had a chance to listen to one of PEI.s most accomplished fiddlers, Roy Johnston. Roy provided illustrated music examples from his search for a voice that speaks to the heart and soul.

Architect David Bergmark focused on the importance of sustainability, and in particular the Jean Canfield Building in Charlottetown that has been recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly buildings ever constructed by PWGSC.

Ian Scott, former Executive Director of the PEI Museum & Heritage Foundation spoke on Family Matters: The Power of Connectedness in Prince Edward Island.

Linda Duncan gave a presentation on our Island mussel industry, where she talked about how mussels get from our Island waters to our dinner plates and the importance of mussels to our Island economy. Those in attendance had a chance to taste some of our famous Island mussels.

We acknowledge and appreciate Ann Bevan-Baker and her staff for opening their café to our Island visitors. Plans are underway for this years Summer Lecture Series. If you have any suggestions for topics, The Community Foundation would be pleased to hear from you.

U.S. Citizens Day Celebration

As many of us know, the Island is a popular destination for many of our friends from the south during the summer months. U.S. Citizens Day is an opportunity for many U.S. visitors to gather together and celebrate their country.s birthday.

CFPEI partners with the City of Charlottetown in hosting this celebration which was held at the United Service Officers Club, a former site of the U.S. Consulate, known as the Haviland Club. Director of The Community Foundation, Dr. Don Glendenning emceed the celebration, and Mayor Clifford Lee spoke on behalf of The City of Charlottetown. Greetings to our U.S. neighbors was given by former State Senator and Superior Court Judge, Thomas F. Upson of Waterbury, CT.

We appreciate the financial contributions that many of our American friends have made to The Community Foundation over the past year. Their generous support has benefited many Island individuals and organizations. As an example of this, Rear Admiral Louise C. and James E. Wilmot contributed to the establishment of a nursing scholarship within the Souris community.

New Funds

The Community Foundation is happy to recognize two new funds that we received in 2009. Both The Indian River Festival and Property Endowment Fund and The Dundas Community Cemetery Fund. These are just two examples of the several kinds of funds The Foundation provides.

The Dundas Community Cemetery Fund is a managed fund, where funds are entrusted by a charitable organization to The Foundation for investment purposes. Upon request, The Foundation will issue a payment of the accumulated income to the organization in question.

The Indian River Festival and Property Endowment Fund is an agency fund. In an agency fund, the endowment is established permanently with The Foundation. This ensures that the fund will be an ongoing source of support for the organizations programs and operations.

The Indian River Festival Fund is also a challenge fund. This challenge fund is through a great program offered by Canadian Heritage called the Canadian Cultural Investment Fund. This program provides matching funds up to one dollar for every dollar raised in the creation of endowment funds. The purpose of this initiative is to help raise capital and support long-term stability of arts organizations.

If you are a member or know of any arts or cultural organization that could benefit from the program, please contact us for more information.

Financial Information

Canadian and Global markets were seriously affected in 2008 by economic problems in Canada and around the world. Canadian and Global markets improved somewhat for the losses of 2008. We are also pleased to report that our performance is better than the benchmark and we are almost back to where we were prior to the collapse.
