The Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island

Annual Report - 2008

President's Message

Incorporated in 1993, the Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island (CFPEI) is pleased to be the conduit for "connecting people who care with causes that matter" for the betterment of the citizens of PEI. CFPEI serves as a trustee for the management of contributions and endowments from all sources that assist in providing grants and special awards in support of social, educational, religious, cultural and other services. Through the dedication and commitment of time, talent and financial resources by many individuals the Foundation has grown and is currently administering forty funds to the value of almost $1,000,000 and has contributed $1.2 million back to the Island community over the past 15 years. From an investment viewpoint, 2008 was a disappointing year for community foundations, pension funds, endowments and personal investments. At December 31, 2008, our portfolio was valued at $904,320.63.

The Annual Awards Ceremony is one of the main highlights each year for the Foundation. We were pleased this year to grant $60,000 to 35 recipients and to recognize our many donors whose generosity makes this possible. The Foundation.s Granting Committee was very pleased with the high quality of requests that they received for funding but made their task difficult as they were all well-deserving and could not be financially met.

Our Summer Islanders Initiative welcomes individuals who spend time on the Island on a regular basis and are interested in making a difference to its future development. CFPEI hosts The Summer Lecture Series which brings in top-notch speakers to present on Island history, culture and address topics that are important to its current economic development. The Foundation extends a big thank you to Pat and Erskine Smith for the use of the Victoria Playhouse over the past few years. We are pleased that this year the Series will be held at Bytes Café in the newly renovated Hampton United Church. For more information on this Lecture Series or on the Summer Islanders PEI Legacy Fund, please contact the Foundation Office.

Our first Annual Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction was held on August 20, 2008 at the Roma Historic Site in Brudenell. The funds raised through this dinner support the work of the Foundation and its projects. Due to the success and good time had by all, plans are underway for this year.s dinner to be held at Roma on July 31. Tickets will be available shortly and if you are interested in attending, please contact the Foundation Office.

In the coming year, the Board of Directors will continue to expand our current programs and, in addition, develop new initiatives to broaden the services that we can provide. The Foundation.s primary focus is to promote its role and mandate to the Island community and to meet with identified organizations and individuals to see how we can assist them to attain their charitable goals. We have been making presentations to a number of groups and have been pleased with the response to date. If you or your organization would be interested in learning more about the Foundation or interested in a presentation, please let us know. Retiring board members include Myron MacKay and David Campbell - Thank You for your generosity and time.

Than you to everyone who has contributed to the Community Foundation's growth. It is only due to this that the Community Foundation can give support to deserving groups and organizations and insure that we are "adding value" to the various needs throughout the Island community and its development.
