Vol. 8 No.2 - Fall 2009

President's Message

It's been a busy summer. It started off with the Fourth Annual July 4th US Citizens Day reception including an appearance of the Long Island Youth Choir. This was followed by four excellent presentations at the Summer Islander Lecture Series. Add to that our Second Annual Gala Fund Raising Dinner & Silent Auction at the Roma Heritage site. All contributed significantly to our cause of "connecting people who care with causes that matter."

On Sept 2nd we announced grants in excess of $55,000 at our Annual Awards & Volunteer Recognition. This is an amazing figure given the disappointing investment climate in 2008 and reflects the confidence, vision and support of our Endowment Fund patrons. Additionally, other services the Foundation provides to the Charitable sector enabled significant giving to the sector through the receipt of gifts of Canadian securities, the issuance of US IRS tax receipts, the investment management of other charities funds, and the passing along of anonymous gifts. During the event, we recognized Mr. Garth Staples as our Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his work in pioneering the July 4th US Citizens Day event.

Our fall schedule is shaping up to be a busy one with presentations to interested groups. Special thanks to Tim and Kathy Upson for hosting a reception at their summer residence for people who care about the Island. Our story is getting out and people are engaging us in discussions about personal legacies and people are recognizing the value, pleasure and impact they can have in perpetuity by establishing a charitable endowment legacy fund. We are being recognized as a resource in that process, more to follow in the next newsletter. If you think of someone who can utilize the services of CFPEI, please let us know and we'll try to make some connections!

Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner & Silent Auction at Roma

The 2nd Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction held at Roma on July 31st had a great response and were very successful. Chef Peter Dewar and his staff prepared a traditional three course meal.

The Foundation thanks directors, volunteers, donors of items for the Silent Auction items, ticket purchasers, guests who attended the dinner and those who supported the Silent Auction. A special thanks to Marie Salamoun-Dunne for co-ordinating the Silent Auction. The Queens County Fiddlers provided entertainment during the reception.

Summer Lecture Series

Another successful Lecture Series was held this year at a new site, the recently renovated historic Hampton United Church that now houses Bites Café.
Presenters this year included architect David Bergmark, fiddler Roy Johnston, Linda Duncan and Ian Scott.

David Bergmark spoke on sustainability and the Jean Canfield Building in Charlottetown that has been recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly buildings ever constructed by PWGSC.

One of PEI's most accomplished fiddlers, Roy Johnston provided illustrated musical examples from his search for a voice that speaks to the heart and soul.

Linda Duncan made a presentation on mussels which provides a great boost to the PEI economy. Guests had an opportunity to taste some treats from our waters.

Ian Scott, former Executive Director of the PEI Museum & Heritage Foundation spoke on Family Matters: The Power of Connectedness in Prince Edward Island.

Thanks go out to Ann Bevan-Baker and her staff for hosting the Series.

Rear Admiral Louise C. and Mr. James E. Wilmot Scholarship

This first recipient of the Rear Admiral Louise C. and James E. Wilmot Scholarship is Melanie Larkin who is entering her third year in the B.N. Program at U.P.E.I. Melanie and the partners all spoke briefly at the reception hosted by the Souris Hospital.

The recipient and Rear Admiral Louise C. and James E. Wilmot were hosted at the Souris Hospital on August 13th. The scholarship results from cooperation between CFPEI, the Eastern Kings Hospital Foundation, and the Souris Hospital. Through the partnership, both Foundations provide matching contributions to fund a scholarship to a nursing student committed to work at the Souris Hospital. The Souris Hospital guarantees a position at the Hospital for the one or two year term of the commitment, depending on if the scholarship is for one or two years.

Rear Admiral Louise C. and James E Wilmot, citizens of the USA and long-time summer residents of Fairfield, Prince Edward Island chose a nursing scholarship to demonstrate their care for their community.
