The proper restoration and preservation of artifacts that contribute to
knowledge about times past is a constant challenge for collectors of all
types of antiques. For those who own or collect antique farm machinery,
the challenges are particularly formidable, because so many of the items
were used outdoors, and many have spent years parked along fence lines and
exposed to the weather.
If you have an interest in the conservation of antique farm related machinery and equipment, a workshop being organized by Tom LeClair, Site Manager of the Orwell Corner Historic Village may be something that you will want to attend. The two day workshop, scheduled for September 24 and 25, will be led by Mr. George Prytulak of the Canadian Conservation Institute. Mr. Prytulak is one Canada's foremost authorities on the conservation of industrial objects such as farm machinery and equipment. The agenda for the workshop includes the accurate documentation of the condition of an item with digital photographs, written text, and graphics; analyzing and prioritizing problems associated with the objects in an outdoor environment; devising practical solutions to problems; and organizing and presenting practical and persuasive reports. A full description of workshop activities can be found HERE |
The cost to attend the workshop is only $25, which will cover refreshments
over the two days. Arrangements can be made for workshop participants to
purchase lunch at the near-by MacPhail Homestead, or you may bring a lunch
if you prefer.
Those attending the workshop should bring along a digital camera and a laptop computer if possible, but it is not a requirement by any means. Seats for this workshop are limited - only 15 will be available - so those planning to attend should register as soon as possible.
