Who Gives to CFPEI?
Readers may wonder about CFPEI finances; they know students who received
scholarships and groups, maybe even theirs, who received grants - but
nobody stops at the door looking for donations. How does CFPEI do it?
Community foundations are different from other charitable organizations in
a number of ways; (1) They make grants to charities, not to individuals,
(2) they build endowments so that grants can be made not just this year
but in perpetuity and, (3) they focus on a donor.s wishes rather than on
the needs as identified by the Foundation.
So, "Who gives?" Here are some examples:
- The Cumberland Rocky Point Women.s Institute sold their school and set up an endowment to make grants to local schools for literacy materials
- Dr. Hesta MacDonald, an avid reader and well-known author, set up a fund to purchase books for school libraries
- Friends and former students set up a craft scholarship as a way to say a special thank you to Joan Auld for her many years of dedicated service to the craft field.
- Family of the late Eric Robinson want his giving to the community to continue.
- Dr. Lorne Bonnell wanted to provide support for graduate students in pure science at any university

- The Family of David MacKay, a son of the Island and a successful business man, funds grants to improve the cardiac emergency response system.
- US visitors donate to support our cultural industries
- People remember friends and the departed through the planting of trees under our Living Trust
- Mary Campbell wants to honour her husband, Mel, and continue his legacy for youth.
- Dr. Thomas Hall provides general support but is especially interested in our agricultural heritage.
- Dozens of friends remembered Gwenyth Lantz trough the establishment of a Fund in her name.
