Photo by Daria Fallon A second grant in the amount of $200 was made from the Glendenning Fund to the Miramichi Rural School for the purchase of books for the school library. The students shown above made the selection and went to a local bookstore to make the actual purchase. Giving Makes you Feel GoodThe Economist of October 14, 2006 reports that giving is good for you. To quote the Economist: Researchers "found that the part of the brain that was active when a person donated |
happened to be the brain's reward centre - the
mesolimbic pathway, to give it the proper name - responsible for doling out the dopamine-mediated euphoria associated
with sex, money, food and drugs. Thus the warm glow that accompanies charitable giving has a physiological basis."
So, the next time you feel down, make a donation to the Community Foundation. In addition to feeling good about it, you will receive a charitable receipt. Know your CharityMost charities are legitimate and do what they say they do . but not all. And, for the most part, donors know personally either the local collector or people in the local office . and often one knows both. But I.m especially leery of solicitations by phone. CFPEI only makes donations to charities recognized by the Canadian Revenue Agency. Before we make a grant, we check to see that the organization is registered. You can do that also. If in doubt, phone the charities hot line at 1-800-267-2384. My recommendation is that, each year, readers review the annual report of at least one of the organizations you support . and if you have questions, do not hesitate to ask them before making your contribution. It may be interesting to see how much of your donation is used for administration compared to the actual amount spent on serving others. |
