Hesta MacDonald Legacy Fund

We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Hesta MacDonald Legacy Fund. The Fund was established by Dr. Hesta MacDonald, a well-known Islander, educational activist and author.

The purpose of the Fund is to encourage reading in the schools of Prince Edward Island. Grants will be made available to the Belfast Consolidated School, Queen Charlotte Intermediate School and Charlottetown Rural High School for the purchase of books and other print material for school libraries.

In establishing the Fund, Mrs. MacDonald has specified that the books be:
  • primarily for the use of students,
  • placed in school libraries available on loan to students,
  • reflect a range of subject matter and
  • be in either official language.

Recipient schools are to make provision for substantial involvement by students in the identification, selection and purchase of the books.

Diana Sieger

A recent Newsletter put out by Diana Sieger of the Endowment Development Institute, reported that a number of US community foundations use the attention -grabbing statement .For Good, For Ever. as their major promotion. What a great way to describe our role in our communities !!
  Anonymous donation to Kids Count

The following notes are taken from a report presented by Kids Count, the Eastern School board foundation, on the use of a grant, $10,000 US, which CFPEI flowed through from an anonymous donor.

Half the grant, along with some funds provided by the district, was used to ensure that all students could participate in school activities regardless of their family income. Directly attributable to the contribution by the anonymous donor, is support for 71 students from 11 schools to defray cost of band trips, band camp registration, graduation activities, year end field trips, lunches, hot meals and year end school activities.

The other half of the grant was used to leverage additional funds for the "MARS Project", a project designed to provide opportunities for disengaged and at risk students to become more responsible, better community citizens and to take responsibility for themselves, their actions and their local environment. Activities included visits to businesses and community services, camping trips, vocational training, classroom sessions and extra curricular activities.
