Recent New Community Initiatives

Building Community Capacity
As part our continuing efforts to strengthen third sector organizations, individuals and collectivity, the Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island, working with its consultants MRSB, commissioned a Building the Community Capacity study which was completed in April 2011. The intent of the study was to look at the social and economic impacts of the third sector, to identify key challenges and to determine which supports; resources and initiatives would be most beneficial for building capacity and sustainability within third sector organizations.

Recently, we have been holding information sessions for organizations of the Third Sector across Prince Edward Island to report on the findings of the study; the proposed recommendations; to gather input and to discuss possible next steps.

Our next session will be held on Thursday, November 24 in Summerside with another being scheduled for Montague on December 1. For more information or if you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please contact us at 892-3440 or by e-mail at cfpei@pei.aibn.com

Youth In Philanthropy
CFPEI is pleased to announce that in September, a Youth in Philanthropy Program (YIP) will be launched at Kinkora High School. Through a generous donation of $3000 by Mastering Packaging in Borden it will provide funding for the first two years and in turn will enable the students to support charitable initiatives in their community. CFPEI would also like to thank the administration of Kinkora High School for initiating the program with their students.

What is YIP?

YIP is a growing movement that engages young people in building philanthropy in communities across Canada by connecting them with community foundations and Youth Advisory Committees (YAC). YAC is a committee or council made up of young people from a diverse range of backgrounds who want to be actively involved in supporting their community. With the support of an adult advisor, each YAC works to raise money, build endowment funds and make grants to youth projects in their local community.

Youth philanthropy is local and global. In addition to Canada, YIP programs have been started in countries such as the United States, Australia, England, Ireland, Mexico and Poland, and there is growing interest in places such as Russia and Zimbabwe. This growing international network shares and learns from each other, as well as inspires and helps new YACs, close to home and around the globe. For more information go to www.yipcanada.org

Supporting PEI Arts
CFPEI recently entered a partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage to encourage arts organizations to build endowments. DOCH will match endowments established by arts organizations provided that such endowments are placed with Community Foundations. To date, the Foundation has entered into an agreement with one Island Arts organization to establish such an endowment, and is in discussion with other groups.

CLIA CFPEI is partnered with the Community Legal Information Association to participate in the delivery of workshops across PEI in 2011 to enhance the lives of seniors through the provision of consultation on finances, will-making and other facets of living as a senior on Prince Edward Island.
